The Bible Column - Rest for your Soul

“Thus saith the Lord, stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls. But they said, we will not walk therein.” Jeremiah 6:16
A word for the present hour seems to be “change”. We know that while change can be a good and wonderful thing, it is very important that change includes right principles of truth and justice.
In the Scripture above, the Lord had warned against change that violated the good way and the old paths. The Lord encouraged that if His way was followed, they would find rest for their souls. Imagine, finding soul rest, simply as a result of choosing the right way! What a blessed opportunity the Lord had offered… “rest for your souls”. The soul is the most central part of an individual. The soul is eternal. The soul can be at rest or in turmoil. The Lord’s offer here to His people, is that they could have rest in their eternal and most inward being. Now notice their sad response. “But they said, we will not walk therein.” Think of the lost blessing because of their rebellion..No rest for their souls.
Dear reading friend, may our quest for any change not cause us to act in rebellion against Almighty God and His ways and principles of right and truth. Would to God that our nation’s leaders would be mindful and obedient to this principle of the old paths. Would to God that our people, including you and me, would yield to the Lord in these matters today as well! Thanks for reading.
