The Bible Column - A Mother - The Band of the Family

“And Adam called his wife’s name Eve; because she was the mother of all living.” Genesis 3:20
Happy Mother’s Day 2020! An 8 year old wrote an essay on “What Mom means to a kid”. He pretty well hit the nail on the head when he wrote: “A mother is a person who takes care of her kids and gets their meals, and if she’s not there when you get home from school, you wouldn’t know how to get dinner and you wouldn’t feel like eating it anyhow”.
The Hebrew word translated in the passage above speaks of a “mother” as being “the band of the family”. Almighty God determined that in one person, a mother, there would be both an “help” which was “meet” or fit for her husband and the “band” or fastener that ties the entire family together. In the name “Eve” we learn of another aspect of a mother, that of the “life-giver”.
The brief essay from the 8 years old boy expresses the great need that a child has for the banding of the family. Just as the life-giver is required in birth so the “one who bands the family” is required for the successful rearing of a child.
Mothers, be encouraged today. Do your mothering the Bible way and be used of the Lord to band and raise your family pleasing to the Lord. May the Lord bless your labor for Him!
