The Bible Column - I Want Sunday For Myself (Part 1)

“I was in the Spirit on the Lord’s Day…” John 1:10a
In our day very few folks realize what the Lord’s Day really is. Rather, the masses and even many professed Christians, seem to believe and display, by their life actions, that Sunday is “Their Day” instead of the “Lord’s Day”. Please consider the first segment of “An Important Message For Today” entitled “I Want Sunday For Myself”.
Not long ago a certain pastor visited a man of his congregation who had been absent from church for a month. The pastor told him he had been missed; but the man’s only reply was: “I want Sunday for myself”. This is truly the attitude in our day and especially so during the summer months, for the majority of people say, “I want Sunday for myself”.
Beloved, Sunday is the Lord’s Day. On this day the Lord of Glory rose from the dead. On this day He appeared to His disciples turning their despondency into joy. On this day He appeared to Thomas pointing to His hands, feet, and side, changing his doubt into adoring trust. On this day He came back in the person of the Holy Spirit never again to leave His people. Because of these things, the first apostles called this day “The Lord’s Day”. On this day they made their offerings to the Saviour.
The way we spend the Lord’s Day shows our attitude towards the Bible. In the Old Testament they had the Sabbath Day. God constantly used the word “remember” in referring to this day. He did not want His people to forget His day. In the New Testament we find that the important events of the Gospel are woven around the Lord’s Day. The forgetfulness of the Lord’s Day today is proof that we as a society, either do not know the Scriptures or we do not love God’s Word as we should. God’s Word is neglected and forgotten and disobeyed throughout our nation.
Next week, the Lord willing, we’ll continue this article.
