The Bible Column - Three Trees Identified in the Bible (Part 1)

“And out of the ground made the Lord God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil.” Genesis 2:9
“Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree…” I Peter 2:24
In these verses, three trees are identified. They are the “tree of life”, the “tree of knowledge of good and evil” and the “tree of Calvary’s cross”. Each tree has a different part in the gospel story of the Bible.
The “tree of life” is the tree of eternal life and the blessing of Almighty God. This tree was the central tree in the Garden of Eden. It is the tree to which God sent angels, to not allow fallen mankind to partake of its fruit. Genesis 3:22-24 The “tree of life” is identified in the book of Revelation as the tree of God’s eternal blessing.
The “tree of the knowledge of good and evil” is the tree of mankind’s eternal ruin. As God had directed Adam and Eve to not eat of this second tree, the choice was theirs to obey God or not. As they listened to Satan’s lie, they disobeyed God and learned about evil as well as good. Today, the quest to know all, is a constant downfall into sin many times. The Bible declares that we need to be wise concerning good, and simple about that which is evil. Romans 16:19
The third tree then, is the “tree of Calvary’s Cross”. This tree is the tree of mankind’s redemption. Only through this tree, can forgiveness of sin come to sinful people. More next week, the Lord willing!
