The Bible Column - Father's Day

“Now the days of David drew nigh that he should die; and he charged Solomon his son, saying…” I Kings 2:1
Recently in our land, our Mothers were honored on their special day called “Mother’s Day” and deceased veterans and other loved ones were honored on what is now called “Memorial Day”. Next Sunday, the Fathers of our land will be remembered and honored on their special day, “Father’s Day”, as well.
My heart goes out to those who do not know who their parents are…Also, those who have lost parents in war, and what we might think of as an early death. Both of my parents were together throughout their married life. They both died in old age. I knew and know who they were! Together they raised our family of six children. Both are now with the Lord waiting for the resurrection of their earthly bodies. Both my dad and I served in the military…him in WWII and myself in the Vietnam War. We both came back from war mostly unharmed, except for what war does to each one involved, emotionally and in heart! I am very grateful for my parents…their love for and instruction to me! They also told me the way of eternal salvation from the Bible.
Each person whether a mother, a veteran, a father, a son or daughter has a special place in the hearts of loved ones and certainly before Almighty God. The Bible directs in the proper role of each one while living on this earth. I would not want to walk this pilgrim journey without the Lord’s help. We need to learn from each other as well, from day to day.
We read in the Scripture above that as David “drew nigh that he should die”, he had a charge and direction for his son. Fathers today, need to direct their children as well. As Solomon, we too, even as adult children need to be open to the thought of living parents and also the remembrance of past love and direction of parents who have gone to their reward. While this life is only a time of preparation for the life to come, many are the responsibilities!
I trust you are a friend of God today through the ministry of reconciliation. If not, you can be reconciled to God through the provision of the death of Christ on the cross. Reconciliation is a Bible word that means to be changed from being an enemy of God, through our sin and rebellion against God, to becoming a friend and a child of God through believing the Gospel of Christ. This gospel is God’s good news to you and me that even though we have sinned and rebelled against God and done things that we should not have done, we can be forgiven by repenting of our sin and receiving the full and immediate remission of God freely through sincere and simple faith in Christ’s saving and finished work!
