The Bible Column - I Want Sunday For Myself (Part 4)
“Upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by him in store, as God hath prospered him, that there be no gatherings when I come.” I Corinthians 16:2
The Scripture above identifies that on the Lord’s Day”, “the first day of the week”, “the resurrection day of the Lord Jesus”, the churches were to gather the offerings for the work of the Lord. Please consider this final segment of, “I Want Sunday For Myself”.
I believe the way we spend the Lord’s Day reveals our true spiritual condition. Believers are new creations in Christ Jesus and this should indicate a right attitude towards His day. An interesting story is told concerning Lord Kelvin, one of the worlds’s most honored men of science. One Sunday morning, his doorbell rang, and two friends, the German scientists, Helmholtz and Hoffman, asked if Sir William Thompson (as Lord Kelvin was then known) was in. The maid replied, “Sirs, he most certainly is not.” They asked: “Can you tell us then where we may find him?” “Yes, you will find him at church, where you ought to be,” replied the maid. The visitors, taken back by this resolute reply, declined further words and went away from the home.
When Christians count the Lord’s Day as just another day, you can conclude that their spiritual life is slipping. Sunday is the time to lay aside every weight, and determinedly put our feet in the path that leads up to the house of God, there to look into the face of our Lord.
The attitude that people have today towards the Lord’s Day was spawned by the devil, born of this godless age, and nurtured at the breast of fallen human nature. Many reasons are given for it – the car, the cottage, the heart, the boat, the golf course, the garden, the long-weekend, the open theatre, the open tavern, the beaches, the carpentering, the house painting. But the basic cause is sin, sin tolerated in the hearts of believers along with the world.
Reading friend, what will you do with the Lord and His day? Your answer will direct your life, for time and eternity!
