The Bible Column - Outside Our Control (Part 1)

“And running under a certain island which is called Clauda, we had much work to come by the boat:” Acts 27:16
In this interesting story of voyage and ultimate shipwreck, we learn of the tossed course of this merchant ship from Alexandria, Eygpt. In the verse above the island of Clauda is identified. The terminology “running under” speaks of a southward travel just near Clauda. This island is located about 20 miles south and southwest of the isle of Crete.
In a previous verse in this chapter, the seaport town of Phenice, on the island of Crete, was the desired destination. However, the fierce winds of the storm called Euroclydon so directed that the desired course was impossible. Euroclydon means “an east wind” or “a storm from the east”. Regardless of what the shipmaster did Euroclydon overruled.
On the sea of life, sometimes the tempestuous winds come against us and our best efforts. While we desire to go to Phenice, rather Euroclydon takes us on a course to Clauda. Phenice represents the thing or place that we desire. Clauda represents the reality that has taken place, and Euroclydon speaks of that matter outside our control that takes us where we do not want to go.
Our need as believers in such an hour is to continue to trust the Lord for His provision. Our Lord is able to protect in Clauda as well as in Phenice, according to His will. Even with the fierce winds blowing against our way, the Lord is able to protect. Child of God, continue to trust Him today! He is Almighty God! He’ll see you through!
