The Bible Column - Precious Promises Given to the Christian

“Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.” II Peter 1:4
The truth of this wonderful verse of Scripture is worth more to the recipient than silver or gold. Please think with me about the 3 parts of its information.
First, we learn in the word “Whereby”, of the context of this Scripture in the previous verses. There in I Peter 1:1-3 we learn of salvation by grace through faith alone in Christ’s finished work on the cross of Calvary. Secondly, then in the word “given”, we learn that through these free “great and precious promises”, an individual becomes a partaker of the divine nature. Think of the wonder of this truth…that a sinner like us can be born again and be a partaker of the divine nature acquiring the forgiveness of our sins and the assurance of Heaven as our eternal home.
The third and final truth found here, is that through this process of Bible Salvation, we have, “escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.” By being a partaker of the divine nature and yielding our lives and bodies to the leading of the Holy Spirit of God, we can escape worldly corruption. Even though we are still sinners and live in the world, we are able to live apart from the corruption of the world. Here the Bible calls it, “having escaped the corruption”. This manner of life should be the way of every Believer.
