The Bible Column - The Intervention of God
“In these lay a great multitude of impotent folk, of blind, halt, withered, waiting for the moving of the water.” John 5:3
“And immediately the man was made whole, and took up his bed and walked:” John 5:9
In these two scriptures, we learn of the intervention of the Lord for good in the lives of people. I trust that you will take a Bible and read the verses surrounding this true story!
In the first reference above, the Lord directed through an angel to move and trouble the waters for healing. When the waters moved, healing came. Had not the Lord intervened, the waters would not have been healing in nature. Then, we learn in the second scripture that the Lord has more than one way of intervening in the behalf of mankind. God in his love is not limited to only one way of helping us in the matters of our need. When the impotent man, because of his infirmity, could not reach the moving waters, the Lord Jesus brought healing directly to this believing man.
In mercy and grace, God intervenes for His children and those outside of Christ for our good and His glory! His very first help in the lives of every person that is born, is explained in John 16:8 regarding the work of the Holy Spirit. There we learn that the initial ministry of the Holy Spirit of God, in love and help to each of us, is to reprove us of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment. The word reprove means to confute or prove, to admonish, to convict, and to tell a fault. We as sinners, are at fault before God, and need His forgiveness. The Holy Spirit brings conviction to us, to show us our fault before God. Then, as we are made aware of our fault, the Holy Spirit shows us that our remedy is in the Lord Jesus Christ! The Scripture says… “Of sin, because they believe not on me: of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more.” The Lord Jesus’ death, burial, and resurrection is the complete provision and remedy for our fault before God. Finally, the Holy Spirit convinces us that we will be judged for our sin along with Satan, who is the prince of this world!
Do you see it Christian? Do you see it sinner friend? The intervention of God in our lives provides the escape that we need, in salvation and the Christian life!
Of Jesus love that sought me
When I was lost in sin
Of wondrous grace that brought me
Back to His fold again!
