The Bible Column - What To Do Next and How?
“But the path of the just is as a shining light, that shineth more and more unto the perfect day. The way of the wicked is as darkness: they know not at what they stumble.” Proverbs 4:18-19
“O our God, wilt thou not judge them? For we have no might against this great company that cometh against us; neither know we what to do: but our eyes are upon thee.” 2 Chronicles 20:12
As each of us treads this pilgrim and earthly path, the question of what to do next and how…is ever before us. Amidst trial and blessings, this need is present and universal. Both godly and ungodly people seek and work to understand this task. How, we might ask, can I know? Where do I turn for these every day answers? In the Scriptures above, we learn the Bible recipe.
In 2 Chronicles 20:12, we read of our need for God’s wonderful help? Sometimes that help involves dealing with other people. We often realize that we are weak and they are strong. We know that we have an enemy… “this great company that cometh against us;…” Then, we do not know what to do! The clear answer to this circumstance, is to place our eyes upon the Lord, God of Heaven!
Additionally, in Proverbs 4:18-19, we learn the concept of “more and more”. God in His divine and eternal insight, knows our frame, and knows that much knowledge is to wonderful for us! Psalms 139:6 says, Such knowledge is too wonderful for me: it is high, I cannot attain unto it. So, God gives us information, help, and direction, just a little at a time unto the perfect day. The secret to the knowledge of the next step in our lives, is to obey the present step of God’s leading! As we walk in the light of God’s leading today, the light for the next step comes to us, “more and more”! Obedience to what God has told us to do now, is the key to God showing us the next step!
In 1 Samuel 16, as the Lord was directing Samuel to know the next king for Israel, the knowledge from God came to Samuel, “more and more”. In verse 1, the Lord told Samuel to, “…fill thine horn with oil, and go, I will send thee to Jesse…” In verse 2, “…And the Lord said, take a heifer with thee and say…” In verse 3, “And call Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will shew thee what thou shalt do:…” Notice then, that through verse 13, as Samuel obeyed, the direction for the next step came from God! God continued to give Samuel, “more and more” information and direction for his present task! God’s choosing of David, the youngest son of Jesse, was then clearly revealed to Samuel!
By contrast, in Proverbs 14:19 above, we also learn that the way of those outside of God’s direction…the wicked, is as darkness: they know not as what they stumble. Turn to the Lord, dear sinner friend, and have the light of life. John 8:12
