The Bible Column - You can depend upon the Lord in your present distress
“And the king sware, and said, As the Lord liveth, that hath redeemed my soul out of all distress…” I Kings 1:29
As King David neared physical death and also faced the unrighteous usurping of Adonijah to be the next king over Israel, he sware or declared with an oath. His oath had to do with the Lord God of Heaven. It had to do with the Lord’s help in his life. It had to do with the Lord sparing and preserving not only his body but also his soul out of all distress. Here, the word distress, speaks of tightness or trouble, an adversary or tribulation.
King David knew from spiritual experience, that when he was in a tight place, his resource was to call upon and sware by the One who had always redeemed him out of all distress. As the Lord had helped him slay Goliath and brought forgiveness to his heart after his sin with Bathsheba, so too now, he knew the Lord would be his portion in this situation.
Dear friend, have you learned spiritually that, you like King David, can depend upon the Lord God in your present distress? Notice that David said that the Lord “Hath redeemed my soul out of all distress.” Regardless of the distress of this day, the Lord is able to preserve you in this time also. Clearly, this life is full of distress. That will never change. But the part that can change for us is whether or not we turn to the Lord for his redeeming power. The redemption of God in our lives begins the day we ask the Lord Jesus to be our personal Saviour from sin. Then, as we continue to trust Him day by day, his redemption extends to our present distress.
The Lord is able to meet our needs! May we use His ability in our lives today!
