The Bible Column - Drawing Near to God
“But it is good for me to draw near to God: I have put my trust in the Lord God, that I may declare all thy works.” Psalms 73:28
A favorite verse of mine is John 17:3. The truth of that verse and the one above contain a common thought. In John 17:3, the Bible gives the definition of eternal life as that of knowing the only true God and Jesus Christ, whom the Father sent to this earth. In the Psalms passage above, the truth of being able to actually draw near to God and then truly trusting Him is given.
It is a wonderful thing to me to be able to know and communicate with the very God of the universe. We know that there are many gods available for worship, but there is only one true God and His Son Jesus Christ. While some may think it grand to know or have known some important person on this earth, how much more wonderful to truly know the only true God in Heaven.
Above, the Psalmist declared that it was good for him to draw near to God. This speaks of a spiritual relationship that is possible between creation and creator. This spiritual activity of drawing near to God is the place of the full blessing of the Lord. As we draw nigh to Him, He draws nigh to us. James 4:8 Then as we sense His presence and His help we learn to trust Him.
The last thought in the verse above naturally follows – We want to tell others what the Lord has done for us. Whether for saving us or for some blessing in the Christian life, the trusting saint always has the desire to tell of the Lord’s help. The desire to draw ever close to the Lord is also a natural part of being a new creature in Christ Jesus!
Nearer, still nearer, while life shall last,
Till safe in Glory my anchor is cast;
Through endless ages, ever to be
Nearer my Saviour, still nearer to Thee.
