The Bible Column - Our Life is a Vapour
“Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.” James 4:14
This verse is in the context of scripture where worldliness and living for oneself and the old devil is rebuked. The subjects are many here and are clearly to be rejected by the born-again believer. The following is a partial listing of subjects covered in this context: Wars and fighting, lusts, wrong prayer, adultery, friendship of the world, the proud and humility, yielding to the devil, wrong speech, boasting of tomorrow, and not doing what we know is right.
The subject of boasting of tomorrow is given in the latter verses of this chapter and is centered in the scripture given above. In the previous verse, the thought of saying that tomorrow we will do this or that and go into the city and continue there a year, and buy and sell and get gain, is given. But, verse 14 gives what we should think and consider. We do not know what tomorrow will bring. Our life is a vapour that appears for just a little time and then it vanishes away. Think of the very brief time that a vapour in the air really lasts!
Sinner friend, today is the day of salvation. Christian friend, today is the day to be living for the Lord Jesus. Very soon our lives will be over!
